Conversing with the Cards – The Major Arcana: The Lovers

The Lovers

by Morgana Moonfire

Impressions: A couple, serene and content, walks hand in hand underneath the trees. They may be newlywed as they are both clad in white and both are wearing flower necklaces. A hand sticks out a golden bowl and a child is grinning behind the man’s shoulder, almost as if he were making fun of them.

The energy radiating from this card is not the feeling of butterflies in the stomach, of being head over heels, but rather expresses a feeling of serenity and amity. The couple portrayed in the card is at complete harmony with the world. They are at peace with themselves and enjoy each other’s company. Their hearts are filled with contentment, there is nothing missing and the world to them is a blissful and perfect place. Everything they wished for has been granted. They need nothing more than the other’s presence to feel complete. Their happiness is not of the dreamy, ephemeral and dramatic kind that takes you to soaring heights only to leave you feeling empty and hollow when the cause for the excitement has disappeared or changed. The mirth they experience is the sort where you feel at one with the world, as if your heart and the heart of the universe are beating in unison. There is no discord or great conflict threatening to overthrow your stable state of mind; there are no extreme emotions of ecstasy or depression. This is the sort of joy you feel when you are able to appreciate the simple and yet extraordinarily important things in life: friendship, family, love.

When this card comes up, it usually means that you are on the same page with the ones you love or that you are pleased with how your life is going and what you have achieved. You do not stand alone but you have people at your side who truly understand you, appreciate you for who you are and care about you. They know you inside-out; they know your virtues and vices, your failures and passions and understand what drives you. There is actually only one type of love and that is unconditional love. True love is tolerant and compassionate and does not see in black and white. This pure kind of love is represented by this card but it does not always have to relate to people and your relationship with them. It may also denote the love you have for life in general or for the things you do, which is what will ultimately determine many of the decisions you make in life. When you draw this card in a reading, you are not passing from intense highs to severe lows, but you have managed to moderate and balance all areas of your life so that you feel peaceful. You have achieved a healthy life style and you feel that your life is heading in the right direction.

Key words or sentiments: satisfaction, wholeness, peace, companionship, love, solidarity, harmony, balance, moderation, the image of people holding hands, you do not stand alone, amity, making the right decisions, compassion.

The Lovers to me, is harmony and beginning to understand. They are like the flower and the bee, a perfect symbiotic relationship. It is in this harmony that knowledge can truly be shared and understood, and experienced fully. Knowingness alone is not enough anymore.

Very true. I believe is a very strong link between compassion, harmony and understanding. As you say, to be in the know is not enough. One must also be compassionate in order to truly understand the truth.
